At this week’s Democratic National Convention, former Fox News reporter Steve Cortes attempted to highlight what he sees as hypocrisy within the Democratic Party’s stance on immigration by bringing a Venezuelan migrant, Edwin, to the event.
The pair was ultimately barred from entering the convention, despite efforts to gain access.
Steve Cortes, known for his outspoken views on immigration and border security, decided to bring Edwin, a Venezuelan migrant who had recently entered the United States, to the Democratic National Convention.

Cortes intended to draw attention to what he views as a contradiction between the Democratic Party’s open-border policies and the security measures in place at their own event.
Upon arriving at the convention, Cortes and Edwin were met with significant barriers, both literal and procedural.
Security guards and DNC staff required credentials for entry, and the pair quickly realized that gaining access would not be straightforward.
Despite repeated attempts, Cortes was unable to secure credentials for Edwin, resulting in their removal from the building by DNC staffers and volunteers.
In a video documenting the experience, Cortes approached a second group of security guards, stating, “This is Edwin. He’s from Venezuela. He’s a migrant. The Democratic Party wants an endless stream of migrants into America, so I’d like him to go and meet his political friends, listen to the speeches and go into the Democratic Convention.” However, their request was denied once again.

The DNC is more secure than America’s border.
When a Venezuelan migrant tried to get into the DNC, he was denied due to lack of ID, failure to submit an application, and no credentials.

As they left the area, Cortes turned to Edwin and remarked, “Well, Edwin. Kamala Harris has an open border. You’re allowed in America, you’re not allowed into her party.” The video has since gained traction online, with many conservatives pointing to the incident as an example of what they perceive as the Democratic Party’s inconsistent approach to border security.
The video caught the attention of several high-profile figures, including Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, who commented on the situation, saying, “Does seem hypocritical.”
Security for Democrat elites but no security for every other American.
Hypocrisy at its worst.
A nation without borders cannot survive.

Musk’s comment has further fueled the debate over the apparent contradictions in the Democratic Party’s stance on immigration and border security.
Cortes’ stunt was intended to criticize the Democratic Party’s approach to immigration, particularly the contrast between their advocacy for open borders and the strict security measures at the DNC, which included barriers and credential checks. For many conservatives, the incident underscores their belief that the party’s rhetoric on inclusivity does not align with its actions.
The Democratic National Convention, held at Chicago’s United Center, has been marked by heightened security, including multiple layers of fencing and a significant police presence, measures that are standard for national political conventions.
However, Cortes and others argue that these measures conflict with the party’s public stance on immigration and border policies.
The Democratic National Convention, set to continue through the week, has already seen its share of controversy, including protests and heightened security measures.
Democrats have now built three layers of walls outside their convention to protect themselves.

As the event progresses, the conversation surrounding the party’s policies and the optics of their implementation is likely to continue, with incidents like this one fueling ongoing debates about the future of U.S. immigration policy.
