The incident began in the 55th minute when Rutgers senior Gia Girman committed a foul from behind on a UMass player, causing both to fall to the ground. As the play continued, UMass senior Ashley Lamond approached to retrieve the ball near Girman’s feet.

This seemingly routine action sparked a confrontation between the two players. Girman, appearing to take offense to Lamond’s actions, began pushing and shoving her opponent.
The situation quickly deteriorated when Girman threw the first punch, escalating the conflict into a full-blown brawl. Lamond responded by pulling Girman’s hair and wrestling her to the ground, leading to a chaotic scene on the field.

Teammates from both sides rushed in to separate the players, but not before the damage was done. The referee, following the rules, issued red cards to both Girman and Lamond, ejecting them from the game.
With both teams now down to 10 players each, the match resumed under heightened tension.Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, the intensity of the game only grew, with four yellow cards being issued in the final 35 minutes—two to each team.
The heightened tension on the field was palpable, as both sides fought hard to gain the upper hand. Ultimately, UMass managed to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Rutgers, a win that was hard-fought and well-earned.
This victory was particularly significant for UMass, marking their first win of the season after tough losses to Syracuse and Army, providing a much-needed boost of morale for the team.
