Ryan Routh, the man accused of an attempted assassination plot against former President Donald Trump, entered a not guilty plea to new federal charges in a West Palm Beach, Florida courtroom on Monday.
Represented by public defenders, Routh is facing five charges, including the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assault on a federal officer, as reported by Fox News.
Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart oversaw the hearing, where Routh’s defense team made it clear they were seeking a jury trial.

Reinhart formally accepted the not guilty plea and allowed Routh to stand alongside his attorneys at the lectern. When asked if he understood the charges, Routh responded simply, “Yes, your honor.” The defense opted not to have the indictment read aloud in court.

Appearing in shackles and a tan prison jumpsuit, Routh’s demeanor in court suggested he was trying to communicate. He seemed to motion with his cuffed hands, possibly signaling he wanted something to write on, and even appeared to acknowledge the presence of the courtroom sketch artist with a slight nod.
These recent charges add to Routh’s already significant legal troubles. Just last week, he was charged with federal gun offenses, including possession of a firearm with a scratched-off serial number and illegal possession of a gun due to his status as a felon. A federal judge had ordered him to remain in custody at that time.
Federal prosecutors and the judge provided more disturbing details during the hearing. Routh allegedly stalked Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property and Trump International Golf Club for several weeks before his arrest.
On September 15, Routh reportedly spent 12 hours outside the golf club, rifle in hand, as the former president played a round of golf. His alleged plan came to an abrupt halt when a Secret Service agent spotted him aiming the rifle through a fence. The agent fired at Routh, who fled but was quickly apprehended.
As reported by federal officials, Routh may have been planning an escape to Mexico. His actions, combined with his prior offenses, have led to significant attention from law enforcement and concern for the safety of prominent political figures. The case continues to unfold as the courts work through the serious charges.
