Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign is encountering significant challenges, according to a recent analysis by CNN’s election analyst Harry Enten.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at Ripon College, Thursday, October 3, 2024, in Ripon, Wis.

During a segment on CNN, Enten highlighted new data indicating a concerning lack of optimism among voters about the direction of the country under Harris’s leadership.

Enten pointed out that only 28 percent of Americans believe the U.S. is on the right track, based on findings from a Cook Political Report survey.

He explained the significance of this statistic, stating, “This sort of gets at a problem for Kamala Harris’s campaign.” He added, “Just 28 percent of Americans think the U.S. is on the right track.”

Enten emphasized that historically, presidential candidates from the incumbent party have faced significant challenges in securing a second term if voter sentiment was similarly negative.

He stated, “The bottom line is, it looks a lot more like a loser than it does like a winner,” underscoring the difficulties Harris may face in the 2024 election.

Enten’s analysis highlighted the lack of historical precedent for a candidate to win with such low voter confidence in the country’s direction. “There is no historical precedent for the White House Party winning another term in the White House when just 28 percent of the country thinks that we’re on the right track,” he noted, adding, “It would be historically unprecedented.”

Comparing the current numbers with past successful campaigns, Enten pointed out that winning candidates in elections from 1980 onward had much higher approval ratings when voters were asked whether they believed the country was on the right track. “Thirty-nine was the lowest back in 1996. We got upwards of 47% in ’84, of course that was a blowout for Ronald Reagan,” he said.

The struggles of the Harris campaign are further reflected in recent polls showing former President Donald Trump gaining momentum in key battleground states.

According to DailyMail.com’s election analysis, Trump has built a significant lead in several important states.

When processed through the DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners election model, Trump was shown winning 56.7 percent of the simulations, moving from a five-point lead earlier in the week to a 13-point lead.

The model simulates the course of the election thousands of times based on national and state-level polling data, combined with decades of election results and economic indicators.

While not a direct poll lead, it provides a probability of a candidate winning the Electoral College, and current data suggests Trump has the upper hand at this stage of the race.

As the 2024 election approaches, these trends highlight the difficulties Harris may face in overcoming voter dissatisfaction and competing against a strong Republican challenger in Donald Trump.
