In El Sereno, California, a 93-year-old woman had been hearing strange noises in her house at night. At first, her son dismissed it as rats or his mother’s imagination. Little did they know, there was a naked man living in the crawl space beneath their home.
The woman had been complaining about the noises for months, but her son didn’t take it seriously until he spent a night there himself. He heard banging and shifting sounds coming from under the house and decided to call the police.
To their surprise, the officers discovered a 27-year-old homeless man named Issac Betancourt living in the crawl space. He had made it his hidden sanctuary, accessing it through three different entrances and carefully replacing the loose hatch to avoid suspicion.
Despite the discovery, Betancourt refused to leave his newfound dwelling. The police had to resort to using tear gas to force him out. It remains a mystery why he chose this particular spot to seek shelter and why he always remained naked, even though clothes were found in the crawl space.
According to the woman’s family, Betancourt had been living there for about six months. He was arrested for trespassing but quickly released to find a new place to stay.
