Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi faced a hostile reception during her recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

The 84-year-old Democrat from California, who was in Chicago following her appearance at the Democratic National Convention, was interrupted by anti-Israel protesters as she discussed the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and cease-fire negotiations, as reported by the New York Post.

As Pelosi began to speak about her book, “The Art of Power,” the conversation shifted to the Middle East crisis.

It didn’t take long before a protester shouted, “Free Palestine,” questioning the United States’ involvement in the conflict.

The interruption led to Colbert cutting to a break, but not before assuring the protesters that he would address their concerns with Pelosi.

After the break, Pelosi commented on the recent cease-fire agreement Israel had accepted, expressing hope that Hamas would follow suit. She reiterated her stance that “War has no role in a civilized society” and emphasized the need for trust, peace, and understanding over violence.

Despite her words, another protester interrupted, prompting Colbert to acknowledge the dissatisfaction among some of the audience.

Colbert urged the crowd to listen, explaining that the protesters were upset about the U.S. supplying arms to Israel, which they believed were being used against the people of Gaza.

Pelosi responded by reaffirming Israel’s right to defend itself, especially in light of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023.

She also advocated for a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the region, where both Israel and Palestinians could coexist in security.

The disruptions didn’t end there, with more heckling from the audience as Pelosi attempted to continue. Colbert eventually had to step in, asking the protesters to stop interrupting and wrapping up the segment due to the live nature of the show.

Pelosi’s time in Chicago wasn’t any smoother at the Democratic National Convention, where the atmosphere was thick with tension and uncertainty.

During Joe Biden’s appearance, Pelosi was spotted awkwardly joining in a “We love Joe” chant—a far cry from the confidence she typically exudes.

The chant, intended to rally support for the aging president, came off more as a forced show of unity rather than genuine enthusiasm.

Pelosi’s lackluster participation was telling, as it mirrored her private concerns about Biden’s ability to carry the party to victory in the upcoming elections.

Behind the scenes, Pelosi had reportedly been urging Biden to step aside, worried that his re-election bid might be the kiss of death for other Democrats vying for office.

She feared that Biden’s continued presence on the ticket could drag down the entire party, costing them crucial seats and possibly the White House itself. Pelosi’s efforts to push Biden out were described as intense.

However, when pressed about these tensions, Pelosi attempted to downplay any notion of a rift, offering a vague justification for her actions. “Sometimes you have to take a punch for the children,” she remarked to CNN, a statement that did little to mask the underlying discord.

It was clear that Pelosi was trying to walk a fine line—maintaining her public support for Biden while privately maneuvering to protect the party’s future. The whole episode left many questioning whether the Democrats could present a united front as they headed into a critical election season.
