In a move that’s as unexpected as it is entertaining, Dr. Dre, the legendary rapper and music mogul, is making headlines for his newest endeavor: archery.
That’s right—while Snoop Dogg and Flavor Flav have been busy in the limelight with their own Olympic-themed antics, Dre is setting his sights on the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, not as a spectator, but as a competitor, as reported by OutKick.
Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Romell Young, is far from your typical Olympic hopeful. At 59 years old, Dre is swapping his studio for a bow and arrow, and he’s not kidding around about it. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Dre made it clear that his commitment to archery is no passing phase. “I actually started playing around with archery in junior high,” he said. “I stopped for a while, and my son bought me a setup. I have it set up in my backyard and I heard qualifying for the Olympics is 77 feet. I practice at 90. Wouldn’t that be interesting?”

It sure would be interesting, especially considering that Dre would be competing in his hometown of Los Angeles. Born and raised in Compton, Dre’s foray into archery is as much about personal passion as it is about hometown pride. Not one to shy away from the spotlight, Dre is already getting a bit of encouragement from his famous friend, Snoop Dogg, who has taken to calling him “Braveheart.”

The seven-time GRAMMY winner and co-founder of Death Row Records is clearly serious about his Olympic ambitions.
He plans to hire a coach to refine his skills and has already attracted the attention of some high-profile archery experts. Justin Huish, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Team USA, has extended an offer to train Dre. “Anyone can do it at any age. There’s not really an age limit,” Huish told TMZ. “You can be a phenom, and you don’t really know.”
Huish is also offering to connect Dre with the right people, including Team USA coaches, to help him on his journey. “If you’re really serious about this, hit me up. We’ll make it happen!” Huish said, clearly impressed by Dre’s commitment.
Dr. Dre’s leap from rap royalty to Olympic contender might seem like a publicity stunt, but it’s a bold move that underscores his ever-evolving persona.
While many in the entertainment industry are often seen as attention-seekers with their own agendas, Dre’s pursuit of archery adds a refreshing twist to his public image.
Whether or not he’ll make it to the Olympics remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Dr. Dre is not afraid to challenge expectations and take his shot at glory, literally and figuratively.
