Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is urging the state Supreme Court to reject an appeal by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, following her removal from the election interference case involving President-elect Trump.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr speaks at the Opioid Task Force meeting on Wednesday at Augusta University.

Earlier this month, the Georgia Court of Appeals disqualified Willis from the case, citing an “appearance of impropriety.”

The court’s decision was partly based on the romantic relationship between Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who had been hired to assist in the prosecution.

In a statement posted on social media Monday, Carr expressed support for the ruling and emphasized the importance of addressing conflicts of interest in such high-profile cases.

Carr, who has announced his plans to run for governor in November, wrote, “The Georgia Court of Appeals has ruled that the Fulton County DA created her own conflict and rightfully removed her from the case against President-elect Trump. ‘Lawfare’ has become far too common in American politics, and it must end.”

Carr further encouraged the Georgia Supreme Court to reject Willis’ appeal, asserting that it was time for her to shift her focus to more pressing matters in Fulton County.

“It’s our hope that the DA will now focus taxpayer resources on the successful prosecution of violent criminals in Fulton County,” Carr added.

Willis had been leading the extensive prosecution effort against Trump and other individuals connected to the case.

However, her handling of the case became controversial after reports surfaced in February that she had been in an “improper” romantic relationship with Wade.

The affair prompted significant backlash, and Wade was ultimately forced to step down from his role in the prosecution.

Despite the court’s ruling against Willis, the case against Trump has not been entirely dismissed.

However, the decision means that Willis and the assistant district attorneys in her office no longer have authority to continue the prosecution.

The court found that the trial court had made an error by not disqualifying Willis and her office from the case, noting that the measures taken to address the appearance of impropriety were insufficient.

“The remedy crafted by the trial court to prevent an ongoing appearance of impropriety did nothing to address the appearance of impropriety that existed at times when DA Willis was exercising her broad pretrial discretion about who to prosecute and what charges to bring,” the court filing stated.

The ruling raises significant questions about the integrity of the prosecution and could have long-term implications for how future cases involving elected officials are handled.

As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the Georgia Supreme Court as it considers whether to take up the appeal and whether it will ultimately uphold the decision to disqualify Willis from the case.
