Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is under fire from critics after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) slapped him with a federal lawsuit.
The controversy centers on his decision to remove thousands of voters from the state’s rolls. His detractors claim this move disenfranchised voters, but Youngkin isn’t backing down. Instead, he’s doubling down, defending the legality of his actions, as reported by Trending Politics News.
During an interview on CNN with Jake Tapper, the first-term Republican governor defended his decision, stating that his executive order to purge noncitizens from the voter rolls was simply enforcing a law that’s been in place since 2006.

Youngkin was quick to point out that the law was signed by none other than former Democratic Governor Tim Kaine. “It requires our election process and governors to use RMV data when an individual self-identifies as a noncitizen. And there is a match with that person on the voter rolls to then notify that person that they have 14 days to affirm that they’re a citizen or not. And if they’re not they’re removed,” Youngkin explained.
We shouldn’t allow individuals who have self-identified as noncitizens to remain on the voter rolls. It’s not just common sense, it’s Virginia law. pic.twitter.com/yNEZcRG6hl

Tapper, perhaps surprisingly, had little to say in response as Youngkin continued, “Why is it that anyone can argue that a process that removes noncitizens off of our voter rolls is anything other than common sense and constitutional.” Youngkin’s defense rested on the idea that both state and federal laws mandate such actions.
Former President Donald Trump also weighed in, posting on Truth Social in support of Youngkin. Trump accused the Biden administration of trying to meddle in Virginia’s election by suing the state to reinstate the purged voters.
“One of the Greatest Examples of DOJ Weaponization is the fact that they are suing Virginia to put ALL of the Illegal Voters, which were fully exposed and removed by the important work of Governor Glenn Youngkin, back on the Voter Rolls. Obviously, this was done so that they can CHEAT on the Election.”
The DOJ’s lawsuit argues that Youngkin’s actions violated the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), which prohibits changes to the voter rolls within 90 days of an election. CBS reported that this law is designed to ensure voters have enough time to appeal any removal before Election Day.
The DOJ has also filed a similar lawsuit against Alabama for its own voter purge efforts. David Becker, executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, noted that it is “unprecedented” for the DOJ to have to sue a state so close to an election.
While the mainstream media continues to downplay the occurrence of voter fraud, President Trump and other Republicans remain vigilant.
In swing states like Arizona, mistakes and discrepancies—such as the distribution of incorrect ballots to over 100,000 voters—have raised concerns, particularly as Trump holds a slim lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in the state.
