House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence in his ability to secure reelection and outlined plans for significant government spending cuts, focusing on areas such as Joe Biden’s green energy initiatives and student loan relief programs.
Johnson shared these thoughts during an interview on Just the News, No Noise on Thursday evening.
“I’ve been working with all of our colleagues here today. We have a very small margin. We can only shed two votes. I think we’ll get over that threshold, and we’ll get this done,” Johnson stated.

The Speaker’s remarks came just ahead of the upcoming vote, scheduled for 12 p.m. on Friday.
Johnson’s goal is to work towards large-scale budget cuts, a task he believes is necessary to reduce government size and waste. “We’ve got to reduce the size and scope of government. Government’s too big. It does too many things and does almost nothing,” he said.
He expressed confidence that Congress will be able to make “significant” reductions, using the budget reconciliation process to pass the cuts.
This process allows for the enactment of legislation related to taxes, spending, and the debt limit with only a simple majority vote, making it a vital tool in the pursuit of fiscal restraint.
While Johnson acknowledged the need to preserve certain portions of the budget, particularly Social Security, he also highlighted areas for potential cuts.
A key target for reduction is the student loan bailout program initiated by President Biden, which Johnson estimated could save taxpayers up to $200 billion.
He also mentioned efforts to undo aspects of the Green New Deal, which he claims would further reduce government spending and address the spending priorities set by the previous administration.
“Unwinding the Green New Deal and all these aspects of what the Democrats did for the last few years will help us substantially. Then we’ll be going through with the fine tooth comb the rest of the budget,” Johnson said.
He emphasized that the process of identifying cuts and reducing spending would be long and difficult, but he believes the end result will be worth the effort.
The upcoming vote is seen as a critical step in Johnson’s strategy to reshape government spending.
With a slim majority, he will need to ensure broad support from his colleagues to pass the proposed budget cuts.
Johnson’s confidence in securing the necessary votes reflects his commitment to fiscal responsibility and the reduction of government waste.
As the vote approaches, many are watching closely to see if Johnson’s efforts to cut government spending will gain traction.
If successful, the cuts could have a significant impact on Biden’s green energy policies and other discretionary spending programs, aligning with Johnson’s broader goal of shrinking the federal government and limiting its reach.
The vote on Friday will be a key moment in determining whether Johnson can maintain the support needed to pursue his fiscal agenda in the coming months.
