Kamala Harris faced criticism following remarks delivered at a church service in Greenville, North Carolina, where her speech on faith during times of crisis left many listeners confused.
Speaking at the Koinonia Christian Center on Sunday, Harris discussed the challenges people face in maintaining faith amid crises, such as the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which impacted parts of North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Harris told the congregation that crises can lead individuals to question their faith. “In times of crisis, and we’re looking at the images of the aftermath of the hurricane, but, it is easy in these moments of crisis to sometimes question our faith,” she said. “To sometimes lose our faith for a moment—because what we see is so hard to see that we lose faith or a vision of those things we cannot see but must know,” she continued.

The speech, however, drew criticism on social media, with many viewers expressing confusion over Harris’ message.
Some likened her speech to what they described as a “word salad,” a term used to criticize her past remarks that appeared disjointed or unclear.
“Kamala Harris is a fortune cookie stuffed inside a magic eight ball and wrapped inside the horoscope page of your local newspaper,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The backlash to her speech in Greenville is not the first time Harris has been criticized for unclear or repetitive statements.
In September, during a speech at the Economic Club of Pittsburgh, Harris faced ridicule for a circular statement in which she said, “Let that then inspire us by helping us to be inspired.”

Harris has also made headlines in the past for her remarks on the “significance of the passage of time.”
In March 2022, while discussing the importance of high-speed internet access, she repeated the phrase several times, saying, “The significance of the passage of time… So when you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time in terms of what we need to do to lay these wires—what we need to do to create these jobs.”

During a trip to Poland, Harris similarly drew attention when she appeared to struggle with her notes while speaking about NATO allies. “I am here, standing here on the northern flank, on the eastern flank, talking about what we have in terms of the eastern flank and our NATO allies, and what is at stake at this very moment,” she said.

The latest instance in Greenville has once again raised concerns about Harris’ communication style, with critics pointing to her speeches as examples of ineffective messaging during a critical time leading up to the 2024 election.
As the 2024 election approaches, Harris and her team are likely to face continued scrutiny over her public statements, with political opponents using these moments to question her ability to lead and communicate effectively.
