This week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC) was a carefully choreographed event, with the themes of “joy” and “unity” on full display. However, the real story was playing out on the streets of Chicago, where a significant rift within the Democrat Party was on full display.

While inside the United Center, the party presented a united front, outside, pro-Hamas, anti-Israel demonstrators were making it clear that not everyone within the party is on the same page. This growing divide is now threatening to cost Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris crucial votes, as reported by Red State.

A key example of this discord was the disbanding of the group Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, which was formed to support Harris during the primaries. This group dissolved after the DNC refused to allow a Palestinian American to speak at the convention.

The “Uncommitted Movement,” which has been vocal in its support of Palestinian rights, had requested a speaking slot for a Palestinian American. When that request was denied, it became the final straw for Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, who announced their decision on Instagram, stating they could no longer support the Harris-Walz campaign in good conscience.

Tensions escalated further when several delegates from the group staged a sit-in outside the convention, demanding that Harris’s campaign grant a Palestinian American speaker time on the stage.

The response from the Harris campaign, however, was to offer meetings with senior officials instead of a speaking slot. Waleed Shahid, a founding member of the group, noted that the campaign was unwilling to let them “define the biggest moment of the vice president’s political life.”

Inside the convention, speeches were given by Jonathan Dekel-Chen, whose son is a hostage in Gaza, along with Israeli-Americans Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, who have also been affected by the conflict. While they called for a ceasefire and an end to the suffering in Gaza, the omission of a Palestinian American voice was starkly noted by many.

The tension within the Democrat Party over the Israel-Hamas conflict is undeniable, with the younger, more progressive members increasingly at odds with the traditional pro-Israel stance of the party.

Even the United Auto Workers (UAW) voiced their concern, tweeting that if the Democrats want to win the election, they must listen to Palestinian Americans.

Not all within the party were sympathetic to the demands. Brianna Wu, executive director of the Rebellion PAC, supported the decision to deny a Palestinian speaker, stating that it was the right move politically.

As the convention wrapped up, the Muslim Women for Harris-Walz issued a final statement, praying that the DNC and Harris would make the “right decision” before the end of the convention. Their parting words left a clear message: Kamala Harris may not have seen the last of this group.
