Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on the morning of August 22, 2024, near Liberty and Sixth Street in Alton, Illinois.
The incident, which resulted in the death of a suspect, also left an Alton police officer and a K9 injured.
According to preliminary reports, the Alton Police Department responded to an incident in the 700 block of E. 6th Street at approximately 6:05 a.m.

During the encounter, officers engaged in gunfire with a suspect.
The suspect was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.
One officer from the Alton Police Department was also struck during the exchange and was taken to a local hospital.
At this time, details regarding the officer’s condition have not been released.
In addition to the injured officer, an Alton Police K9 was fatally wounded in the shooting.
The K9 was receiving care at a local veterinary hospital before being reported as being killed in the line of duty

The Illinois State Police are assisting with the investigation, which has drawn a significant law enforcement presence to the area.

In response to the incident, State Representative Amy Elik issued a statement expressing her concern for those involved. “I’m praying for my friends at the Alton Police Department this morning. It’s been reported that an officer and their K-9 were shot. As we gather more information, please keep everyone involved in your prayers,” Elik said.
