President-elect Donald Trump has announced Kevin Marino Cabrera as his pick for United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama.
The appointment, shared by Trump’s transition team on Christmas Day via Truth Social, comes amid sharp criticism of Panama’s management of the strategic Panama Canal.
Trump’s announcement reiterated his stance on what he views as an unfair arrangement over the canal. “I am pleased to announce that Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, a Country that is ripping us off on the Panama Canal, far beyond their wildest dreams,” Trump wrote.

The statement transitioned to highlight Cabrera’s qualifications and dedication to Trump’s “America First” agenda. “Kevin is a fierce fighter for America First principles. As a Miami-Dade County Commissioner, and Vice Chairman of the International Trade Consortium, he has been instrumental in driving Economic growth, and fostering International partnerships,” Trump stated.
Cabrera has long been associated with Trump’s political efforts.
In 2020, he served as Trump’s Florida State Director, playing a critical role in mobilizing support during the campaign.
More recently, Cabrera was a member of the Republican National Committee (RNC) Platform Committee, where he worked to advance the MAGA agenda.
“Few understand Latin American politics as well as Kevin – He will do a FANTASTIC job representing our Nation’s interests in Panama!” Trump’s statement concluded.
Thank you, President Trump! 🇺🇸
I’m humbled and honored by your nomination to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Panama.

The announcement underscores Trump’s dissatisfaction with Panama’s handling of the canal, a vital shipping route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The issue has been a recurring theme for Trump, who has frequently criticized various international agreements and trade practices as unfavorable to the United States.
Earlier in the week, Trump also sparred with Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo over the canal’s future.
Although details of the exchange remain limited, Trump’s public remarks reflect his broader focus on renegotiating or reassessing international deals.
Trump’s appointment of Cabrera signals a strong stance on U.S.-Panama relations as he prepares to take office on January 20, 2025.
The move aligns with his broader strategy to place allies in key diplomatic roles who share his commitment to recalibrating foreign policy to prioritize American interests.
This announcement follows other high-profile statements by Trump regarding hemispheric relations.
Notably, he recently joked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau potentially becoming a U.S. governor and hinted at implementing tariffs on several nations in the region.
As the transition continues, Trump’s selections for key diplomatic posts, including Cabrera, offer insight into his administration’s priorities for trade and foreign policy in Latin America.
Cabrera’s experience in both domestic politics and international trade is expected to play a crucial role in navigating the challenges and opportunities in U.S.-Panama relations during Trump’s upcoming term.
