During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday, former President Donald Trump delivered a fiery address, calling out what he referred to as the biggest threat to democracy: “stupid people.”
Trump used the platform to criticize both foreign and domestic policies and stressed the need to remove certain figures from the political arena.
“A lot of countries don’t like me,” Trump remarked during his speech. He addressed the foreign policy differences between his administration and that of Joe Biden, saying, “They say, who do you like better? Sleepy Joe Biden, or Trump? ‘Oh, I like Biden better.’ Yeah, because he lets them do what they’re doing. He doesn’t have a clue, the guy.”

Trump went on to suggest that President Biden is not fully engaged with the duties of his office, saying, “He just goes to sleep at 4:00 every damn day. He doesn’t have a clue.”
He then turned to what he believes is the most significant problem facing the country: “And he’s destroying our country. You see, that’s the real threat to the democracy, stupid people. That’s the threat, our biggest threat to democracy is stupid people.”

Trump’s speech also touched on the topic of foreign wars, a consistent point of contention in his political rhetoric.
He criticized the approach taken in past conflicts, stating, “We go in, we blow up countries, and then we leave. We got nothing except dead people all over the place, on both sides. How stupid are we?”
He highlighted his frustration not only with Democratic leadership but also with past Republican administrations. “That was a Cheney deal and a Bush. How stupid are we? Not just Democrats, it’s both. I’m equally angry at both,” Trump said.

Trump’s criticism of past Republican leadership referenced the policies of former Vice President Dick Cheney, whom he blamed for supporting wars that Trump has long denounced.
Cheney, who served under President George W. Bush, has often been associated with the Iraq War, a conflict that Trump has repeatedly opposed.

Earlier this year, Liz Cheney, the daughter of the former vice president, revealed that her father could potentially be voting for Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
In an interview with The Atlantic’s Mark Leibovich, Liz Cheney was asked if she knew who her father would support in the next election. “Dick Cheney, your father, a beloved figure among Democrats for many, many years,” Leibovich said. “Dick Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Liz Cheney confirmed. Leibovich responded, “Words I never expected to hear.”
The possibility of Dick Cheney voting for a Democratic candidate has caught the attention of both political observers and the public, especially given his long-standing affiliation with the Republican Party and his pivotal role in past GOP administrations.
