Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has made it clear that he’s serious about facing off against U.S. Olympic sprinter Noah Lyles in a race. Hill posted a video on Sunday showing Lyles talking with former NFL players Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, where Hill challenged the sprinter to “sign the contract and lock in that 50-yard race,” as reported by Fox News.
Sharpe and Johnson had previously mentioned that Hill would likely beat Lyles in a race, prompting a response from the sprinter. “I’m gonna put it like this: Tyreek is just chasing clout,” Lyles retorted. “Any time somebody fast comes up, he says he wants to race him. If he really wanted to race people, he would’ve showed up like D.K. Metcalf. The man raced in the 60 meters in the master’s division. The man dodges smoke. I don’t got time for that.”
Lyles referenced Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, who participated in the USA Track & Field Golden Games three years ago. Metcalf ran the 100-meter dash in 10.37 seconds, finishing in eighth place, yet received praise for his effort. “I think I did really well for myself,” Metcalf said at the time.

In contrast, Hill competed in the USATF Masters Indoor Championships last year in the 60-meter race, which he won. It was Hill’s first time running on a track in nine years.
Despite his criticism, Lyles indicated he would consider a race with Hill if approached through proper channels. “If he’s serious about it – if he’s truly serious about it and I’m not talking about you just talking on the internet and you not actually coming to me and talking to my agent and saying, ‘Let’s set something up.’ If you are serious about it, you’ll see me on the track,” Lyles stated.
Hill, in response, implied that a contract for a 50-yard dash has already been drawn up, suggesting the next move is up to Lyles.
The tension between Hill and Lyles started when Hill appeared on the “Up and Adams” show, where he took a jab at Lyles, the self-proclaimed “Fastest Man in the World.” Hill referenced an incident in Paris where Lyles, after a poor performance in the 200-meter dash, revealed he had contracted COVID-19. Despite the setback, Lyles managed to win a bronze medal.
“Noah Lyles can’t say nothing after what just happened to him,” Hill remarked. “Then he wants to come out and pretend like he’s sick. I feel like that’s horseradish. For him to do that and say that, like we’re not world champions of our sport, let’s speak on what you know about and that’s track. I would beat Noah Lyles… I wouldn’t beat him by a lot, but I would beat Noah Lyles. When I beat him, I’m going to put on a COVID mask and let him know I mean business.”
Hill later took to social media to express his interest in competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Hill, who ran track in high school with a best 100-meter time of 10.19 seconds, is confident in his speed. Lyles, however, just clinched a gold medal in the 100-meter event with a time of 9.79 seconds, winning by a photo finish.
