According to Maricopa County court records, Kenney faces a total of six charges. The most severe is a Class 2 felony for kidnapping, which carries a potential prison sentence ranging from four years to 12.5 years if convicted. Additionally, Kenney is charged with a Class 4 felony for assault by strangulation and four misdemeanor charges.
The gravity of these charges underscores the serious nature of the allegations against him.
The origins of this case trace back to July when Phoenix Police confirmed an incident first brought to light on Instagram by the alleged victim’s mother, who accused Kenney of domestic violence.
In their report, police indicated that they had discovered an adult female victim with visible abrasions, who reported being assaulted during a domestic violence incident.
Paramedics treated the woman on the scene, and investigators conducted an interview. At that time, no contact was made with Kenney, and the case remained active.
Court records obtained on Wednesday provide further details of the alleged incident. The probable cause statement outlines the harrowing events that reportedly took place between July 21 and July 22.
Kenney is accused of kidnapping and repeatedly assaulting the victim, identified as Jasmine Mendez, at his residence.
The statement alleges that Kenney subjected Mendez to hours of physical abuse, including striking, slapping, biting, headbutting, and choking. Mendez reportedly sustained abrasions, discoloration on her arms, and petechiae on her neck as a result.
During the 13 hours, Mendez was at Kenney’s residence, she was allegedly unable to escape due to Kenney’s repeated physical restraint and threats of further harm.
The statement also claims that Kenney threatened to shoot anyone who attempted to intervene, including Mendez’s mother. Mendez has expressed her desire to pursue prosecution.
A status conference for Kenney’s case is scheduled for August 22, with a preliminary hearing set for August 26.
Kenney, who is 33 years old, hasn’t competed in the UFC since 2021, following a loss to Song Yadong at UFC 265. Although he started with the promotion in 2019, his current status on the UFC’s website is listed as “not fighting.”
